Meilan Biological explains the skillful use of amoxicillin, and the curative effect is doubled

In pig production, pig disease has a huge impact on profits, and usually has a greater impact when clinical diseases break out. Early infection will have a negative impact on the weaning weight and the weight of pigs at the end of care.

In addition, pigs with light weight are prone to diseases in the later stage of breeding. Some important pathogenic bacteria in the critical stage of pig production (delivery and nursing period) are Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Haemophilus parasuis, Pasteurella multocida, etc.

Referring to these diseases, one of the drugs commonly used in pig farms is amoxicillin. Amoxicillin has many advantages in pig production, such as multiple dosage forms that can be intramuscularly injected, drinking water and mixed materials, large amount of use, small side effects, good effect, low price, and so on. However, we also found some improper use in pig farms at the front line. Today, we summarized the dosage and usage of amoxicillin as follows, which is believed to be helpful to our pig production.

1、 Amoxicillin is commonly used in the following aspects

1. Streptococcus, Pasteurella, Haemophilus parasuis and Staphylococcosis (amoxicillin+dexamethasone intramuscular injection) have obvious effect on early infection.

2. Piglet yellow and white dysentery, swine erysipelas.

3. For sow systemic infection, postpartum.

2、 Calculation of amoxicillin powder mix

Assuming that the oral dose of amoxicillin is 6 mg/kg body weight, the pig weight is 50 kg, and the daily feed intake is 3 kg, then: amoxicillin dosage=6X50=300 mg mixed feed ratio=300 mg/3 kg=100 ppm, that is, 100 g of pure amoxicillin is added to each ton of feed.

At present, amoxicillin preparations are generally 10% powder, so 1 kg of 10% amoxicillin should be used per ton of feed to prevent common bacterial diseases. This is also the recommended dose for many veterinary drug factories.

The above calculation is based on the consumption of growing pigs, which should be adjusted to 2-3 kg/ton feed effect for sows.

3、 10% Amoxicillin: Is kg/ton feed enough?

In fact, pig farms only use this dose for disease prevention, and the actual dosage is often larger. Due to people's concerns about drug resistance (which is also the case in fact), amoxicillin preparations are relatively cheap and very safe, so it is more effective to add 10% amoxicillin 2-3 kg/ton feed in disease control.

Here we will introduce the difference between amoxicillin mixture and drinking water, which is convenient for pig farmers to operate.

3.1 Mixing

There are two main advantages of adding amoxicillin to feed:

(1) A large number of pigs can be produced with less labor. It is very time-consuming to use drugs on large groups of animals, and mixing drugs in feed is a very suitable way.

(2) Consistency. If one item needs to last for several days, adding drugs to the feed will reduce the probability of missing some pigs.

However, the mixture also has some disadvantages:

(1) Action time. It may take several days until all animals receive the medicine. When the disease breaks out, the feed with drugs should be ordered and sent to the pig farm. First, the charging tank must be empty before dosing.

(2) Food intake. The health status of pigs will affect the feed intake. A certain proportion of pigs may not eat enough feed, so that they do not get enough drug dose.

(3) Manufacturing problems. Although there are different products on the market, the stability of amoxicillin molecule will be affected by feed granulation. In addition, when the feed is mixed, the premix segregation usually occurs, resulting in different doses of drugs in the same batch of feed.

(4) The risk of intestinal microecological imbalance. When amoxicillin (or other antibiotics) is taken orally, intestinal ecological imbalance may occur, resulting in damage to the intestinal health of piglets.

3.2 Drinking water use

Some advantages of drinking water use are similar to that of mixing materials:

(1) Lots of pigs. Drinking water can produce a large number of pigs at one time with less labor force, but attention should also be paid to timely and more effective administration.

(2) Targeted. It can take a pig house as a unit, or even the different fences in the same house. In addition, the time can be carried out according to the needs. Unlike mixing and dosing, the animal medication period lasts until the feeding tank is empty.

(3) Follow-up. Amoxicillin dissolved in water is a very effective follow-up measure, especially in case of disease outbreak. Timely dose (using injection dose) dissolved in water can maintain the drug concentration in the blood of pigs at a good level, and can last for several days.

At the same time, there are some disadvantages of drinking water dosing, including:

(1) Consistency of dose and. Generally speaking, the uniformity of drinking water dosing is not as good as that of mixing, but it can be improved by improving equipment and training.

(2) Low pH value. There are some pig farms where the pH value of the water source is relatively low or acidifiers are used. The solubility of amoxicillin in acidic water will be affected. According to a study, it will react with citric acid to form white precipitates or crystals.

(3) Water consumption. The health of pigs will also affect the amount of drinking water. In addition, there is evidence that diarrhea caused by Escherichia coli reduces the absorption of amoxicillin on the day of drinking water administration.

3.3 Selection method

In the early stage of pig production, some important pathogens are bacteria, and amoxicillin can be used. Like most antibiotics, many factors need to be taken into account when deciding which way to use. Every pig farm and every situation must consider which method of dosing is more appropriate.

4、 Drug interactions

The combination of amoxicillin and carbaaspirin calcium can delay the absorption and excretion from the kidney, thus improving the curative effect to a certain extent. However, if it stays in the stomach for a long time, gastric acid may destroy some drugs. To sum up, it is a wiser choice to use high-quality and stable amoxicillin preparations.

The combination of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid can improve the efficacy and enhance the effect.

5、 Precautions

Although amoxicillin is a good drug, it still needs to be very careful when using it. Different methods of use should be selected according to different conditions of pigs to give full play to the efficacy of amoxicillin.

Generally, amoxicillin should be administered in drinking water for no more than 3 hours, and the efficacy will be reduced or invalid if the administration time is too long! The practical experience of using amoxicillin in pig production shows that no matter which way of use, attention should be paid to the details in order to achieve success.
